MLK Day Play & Serve Event
On Martin Luther King Day, 1 Campus, 1 Community hosted about 25 kids from North Midtown and about 10 Millsaps faculty kids for a day of fun, learning, and service on the Millsaps campus. Children played organized games, an art project facilitated by Art Professor Brent Fogt and his students; videotaped speeches by Martin Luther King and President Obama; and a trip to the Belhaven Nursing Home to give their newly-created art work to some bed-ridden residents. All in all, the day was a wonderful success and served as a great tribute to Dr. King.

After-School Helpers
Millsaps students are supporting the after-school program at Brown Elementary School by serving as homework helpers and study pals.

Science in Midtown
Millsaps Chemistry instructor Cori Ciacco is offering a five-session seminar to Brown Elementary School 5th graders and their teachers on basic science concepts in preparation for a statewide test in early March. 1 Campus 1 Community Fellow Quanda Sims is assisting Professor Ciacco and is the College’s main liaison to Brown Elementary this year. Other science faculty and students may also join the fun.

Fall Semester, 2007

Habitat for Humanity Community Surveys
Over fifty students helped Habitat for Humanity throughout the course of October by conducting community surveys in North Midtown. The result is a better understanding of the life and needs of Midtown residents—knowledge that will inform the long-range planning process aimed at rejuvenating the neighborhood. The survey project also developed new familiarity between Millsaps and North Midtown populations.

Voter Registration Drive
Approximately 30 students, faculty, and community members joined together last October to launch a voter registration drive in North Midtown. The results were extremely successful, as many community members were officially registered to vote.

Reading Tutor Program at Brown
Ten students and four faculty members donated time weekly to help improve literacy at Brown Elementary School. Dr. Schimmel’s own “Fairview Reading Program” was utilized to help students learn to read better. Reading comprehension improved, on average, 2 to 4 grade levels per child.

North Midtown Thanksgiving Drive
Millsaps Faculty and Staff recently participated in a Thanksgiving food drive benefiting the elderly and disabled in North Midtown. Numerous bags of canned goods were collected, as well as many cash donations. Undoubtedly, our biggest benefactor this year was Chef Dave and the dining services staff. Among their donations were forty chickens! A hearty thanks to all who participated...thank you for helping make Thanksgiving more joyous for those in North Midtown.

Awareness Week
In the first week of December, the Black Student Association of Millsaps hosted an awareness week that included a volunteer fair planned by 1C1C. Non-profit organizations from around the city were present to provide information about their mission and recruit volunteers.
