Millsaps College will offer an exciting active learning experience in Ghana in the summer of 2012. The program will afford students the opportunity to explore the history, government, politics, life, culture, traditions, and arts of Africa.
Central topics include: The struggle for democracy and political reform; Civil society and political participation; Challenges of economic growth, restructuring, and adjustment; Ethnic identity and national unity; Ghana's stability and security in a difficult region; as well as the complex and powerful historical events and personalities that have shaped the modern African nation of Ghana.
Students may receive 4 hours of credit in Political Science, History, or IDST:
PLSC 2750 (4 sem hrs) Special Topics in Political Science: Africa in Transition
HIST 2310/IDST 2500 (4 sem hrs) Black Star Rising: Ghana and the Making of Modern Africa; this class includes field trips to the Asante capital of Kumasi with the palace of the Asanthene as well as the town of Nalerigu, political center of the Mamprusi, in northern Ghana.
INCLUDES: Tuition for one course, accommodation, breakfast, and transport in Ghana.
DOES NOT INCLUDE: Airfare to and from Ghana, cost of meals other than breakfast, and other personal expenses.
As a very rough guide, a participant in the Program will need around $300 to $400 to pay for personal expenses (entertainment, meals, etc.) The actual amount that you will spend depends on your style of living, and will vary with each individual's personal spending habits, entertainment preferences and travel choices. The group flight will cost participants between $1,300 and $1,500 (depending on departure/return dates, the point of origin of any connecting flights in the US, etc.)
Students are strongly encouraged to apply for the Robinson International Fellows Program.
