Requirements for the Spanish major: Students may complete a major in Spanish by successfully completing SPAN 2000 or its equivalent and a minimum of 36 semester hours, normally in nine courses, beyond 2000 chosen in accordance with the table below.
Students wishing to take other combinations of courses for the major must seek and receive the approval of the advisor in Spanish and the Chair of the Department of Modern Languages. Completion of two literature courses at the 3000 level or higher taken at Millsaps with a grade of C or higher is required before taking SPAN 4900 during the fall of the senior year, unless special permission is granted by the Chair. Completion of the senior seminar is required for the major, and must be completed with a grade of C or higher before taking the comprehensive exam in the spring. A grade of C or higher is required for courses in the major at the 2000 level and beyond. Students who place out of one or more sophomore-level courses are required to substitute the course(s) with a course (or courses) at a higher level. Courses taken abroad in a program not led by Millsaps language faculty must be approved by the Chair of Modern Languages, as stated in the International Study section below.
Two sophomore-level courses:
1) Spanish 2110, 2120, 2130 or 2140.
2) Spanish 2110, 2120, 2130, 2140, or 2750.
Two literature survey courses:
3) Spanish 3200, 3210, 3300, or 3310.
4) Spanish 3200, 3210, 3300 or 3310.
Two literature topics courses (the same course number may be repeated with a different topic):
5) Literature Topics Spanish 3750 or 4750.
6) Literature Topics Spanish 4750.
One elective from the following list:
7) Literature survey (Spanish 3200, 3210, 3300 or 3310), Literature Topics (3750 or 4750), Hispanic Civilizations (3220 or 3230), Written and Oral Expression (Spanish 3750) or Linguistics (4750).
One Practicum (applied language studies):
8) Written and Oral Expression (Spanish 3750), Internship (3850, 4850), Spanish for the Professions (2750), Hispanic Civilizations (3220 or 3230) or Linguistics (4750) Senior Seminar
9) Spanish 4900.
Requirements for the French minor: Students may elect a minor in French by successfully completing FREN 2000 or its equivalent and a minimum of 16 semester hours in four courses beyond 2000. At least one of the courses must be a literature course at the 3000 level or above taken at Millsaps. All courses beyond 2000 must be taken at Millsaps (or in a language program abroad led by a faculty member from the Department of Modern Languages. An exception will be made for just one course above 2000 (other than the required literature course at the 3000-level or higher), if taken abroad in a language program approved by the Chair of Modern Languages, as stated in the International Study section below. Students who place out of 2110 are required to substitute it with a course at a higher level. In order to become more proficient in a foreign language, significant time must be spent speaking it. We therefore strongly encourage that all minors have a language immersion experience.

All courses beyond 2000 must be taken at Millsaps (or in a language program abroad led by a faculty member from the Department of Modern Languages). An exception will be made for just one course above 2000 (other than the required literature course at the 3000-level or higher), if taken abroad in a language program approved by the Chair of Modern Languages, as stated in the International Study section below. Language requirement and placement test: The Department of Modern Languages administers its own placement test. The test is compulsory for students who wish to continue their work in a language they studied in high school. Students beginning a new language are not required to take the placement test. Students who score high enough on the AP, IB, CLEP or the Millsaps French and Spanish Placement tests may satisfy the language requirement for the B.A. degree. Academic credit will be awarded only for courses taken. Through the French and Spanish placement tests, students will be placed into 1000, 1010, 2000, 2110 (2120-2130-2140) or higher. Students may present the equivalent of Millsaps basic and intermediate language courses taken at other institutions, thereby satisfying the language requirement for the B.A. degree.
To satisfy the language requirement for the B.A. degree, students must demonstrate proficiency at the intermediate level by successfully completing a language course in 2000, or 2110 (2120-2130-2140), or its equivalent. The language requirement may also be fulfilled with language course taken at a higher level.
International study: Transfer of credit for language courses taken abroad in programs not administered by Millsaps is subject to departmental pre-approval. Copies of the catalog with the course description must be submitted for pre-approval to the department chair by the following dates: October 11 for the following spring semester; February 11 for the following summer session; April 11 for the following fall semester.French and Spanish majors wishing to take courses in programs not administered by Millsaps College Modern Language faculty, whether here or abroad, must seek and receive pre-approval from their French or Spanish advisor and the Chair of the Department of Modern Languages, and must, by the second week of the semester following completion of the program abroad, present copies of all materials (syllabus, tests, papers, assignments) for evaluation by the French or Spanish faculty and the Department Chair, who may elect to accept or reject the course for credit toward the major. Students completing the languages abroad, that are not offered at Millsaps, may satisfy the language proficiency requirement for a B.A. degree by completing a combination of course work with at least two upper level courses and a written test demonstrating language proficiency with approval from the Department chair of Modern Languages.
