Major/Minor Requirements

Neuroscience and Cognitive Studies

 

Requirements for the Major in Neuroscience and Cognitive Studies (13 courses, including 9 general courses and an additional 4 courses from one of two specializations):

These 9 courses are required of all NEUR majors:

  • Cell Biology I with lab (Biol 1001 & 1003)
  • General Zoology with lab (Biol 1023 & 1021)
  • General Chemistry I with lab (Chem 1213 & 1211)
  • Introduction to Neuroscience (Neur 2000)
  • Psychological Statistics (Psyc 2100)
  • Behavioral Methods (Psyc 2110)
  • Cognition (Psych 3100)
  • Philosophy of Mind (Phil 3120)
  • Senior Seminar (Neur 4900)

In addition, 4 courses from one of the following specializations are required:

Physiology and Biochemistry Specialization

  • Evolution and Systematics (Biol 2220)
  • Anatomy and Physiology (Biol 3410 + 3420)
  • Molecular Cell Biology (Bio 3300)
  • Genetics (Biol 2000)
  • Histology (Biol 3100)
  • General Chemistry II (Chem 1223 & 1221)
  • Organic Chemistry I (Chem 2110 & 2111)
  • Quantitative Analysis (Chem 2310)
  • Biochemistry I (Chem 3610)
  • Behavioral Neuroscience (Psyc 3180)
  • Neural Anatomy and Physiology (Neur 3200)
  • Applied Research in Neuroscience (Neur 3400)

Behavioral and Theoretical Specialization

  • Perception (Psyc 3110)
  • Psychology of Language (Psyc 3060)
  • Learning (Psyc 3120)
  • Behavioral Medicine (Psyc 4750)
  • Cognitive Neuroscience (Psyc 3210)
  • History of Neuroscience (Psyc 4750)
  • Philosophy of Science (Phil 3100)
  • Philosophy of Human Nature (Phil 2200)
  • Biomedical Ethics (Phil 2110)

Requirements for the Minor in Neuroscience and Cognitive Studies (5 courses including 3 general courses and 1 course from each of the specializations):

These courses are required of all NEUR minors:

  • Introduction to Neuroscience (Neur 2000)
  • Cell Biology I with lab (Biol 1001 & 1003)
  • General Chemistry I with lab (Chem 1213 & 1211)

In addition, 1 course from each of the above specializations is required.
