Department Offers Scholarship Sponsored by Alumni

Beginning this year, Sociology/Anthropology majors will have a new scholarship opportunity to support study abroad. The new Freeman Sponsored Scholarship Fund for International Travel was established by the generosity of alumni Mark Freeman, class of 1990, and Tara Bond-Freeman, class of 1991.

This money will be used to fund two $500 scholarships each year. Students who wish to receive this award must be Sociology/Anthropology majors participating in a study abroad program led by a SOAN faculty member and must not have received a RobinsonFellowship. This scholarship is intended to aid students studying in the department who would not otherwise be able to afford the cost of an international study abroad experience.

The faculty and students of the Sociology/Anthropology department are very grateful for and excited about this new scholarship opportunity. It is very important that students in the department experience international travel, and this scholarship will make this a possibility for many students in the years to come. It's wonderful to have support from alumni for students’ current and future endeavors.

To Apply:

If you have applied for a Robinson Fellowship, send a one-page statement explaining your study plans for the summer and how they will contribute to your study of anthropology and sociology to the chair of the department (Julian Murchison, murchjm@millsaps.edu).  Please indicate in your statement that you have applied for a Robinson.  Financial data submitted for Robinson consideration will be used in making determinations for the Freeman Scholarships.  In order to be considered, make sure that you have completed a FAFSA form and that it is on file with the Office of Financial Aid.

To apply if you have not already applied for a Robinson Fellowship, send a one-page statement explaining your study plans for the summer and how they will contribute to your study of anthropology and sociology to the chair of the department (Julian Murchison, murchjm@millsaps.edu).  You will need to make sure that you have completed a FAFSA form and that it is on file with the Office of Financial Aid.
