Poetry, Painting and Paris

English 2440/Art 2750: Poetry, Painting, and Paris

This course focuses on writing about and studying the art of Paris. Students who choose the creative writing option will be required to produce a body of poetry based on their field experiences in one of the world's great cities. We'll spend time almost every day in the museums and monuments of Paris - the d'Orsay, the Louvre, the Pompidou Center, the Picasso Museum, the Rodin Museum, and other smaller places (the museum of the Monet water lilies - to view les Nymphéas--for example), and students will write seriously about both painting and poetry. We'll read and study poems about paintings in Paris, and poems about Paris itself.

COST: $3,395.00 per person

Cost includes

• Carte orange (Paris subway pass)
• Lodging (17 days) in student dorms with continental breakfast
• Tuition for one English/Art History course of four semester hours of Millsaps credit, taught by Greg Miller
• One traditional French meal shared together in a restaurant
• Entrance fees to Paris museums; frequent accompanied visits to museums, churches, and monuments in Paris
• Health insurance

• Textbooks and similar material for class
• Cost involved for passport

Requirements

• A strong desire to learn about poetry, the visual arts, and architecture in Paris
• Attendance at all scheduled group trips to museums, monuments, and buildings
• Attendance at all class meetings. The final grade will be dropped by three points for each absence, no matter what the excuse may be, with a failing grade for the course after four absences
  

Lodging

Arrangements have been made for students to live in the dormitories of the University of Paris for American students, in the center of Paris. Alternative lodging may be taken at the FIAPP Jean Monet (an international student dormitory), also in central Paris, only at the discretion of the program director.
