Art majors find their artistic voice and language
through studio courses in drawing, painting, printmaking, photography,
and sculpture. Their are approximately 6 exhibitions each year shown
in the College's Lewis Art Gallery, sometime including student work.
Prospective students who plan to concentrate in studio art are encouraged
to submit portfolios in application for Millsaps' Second Century
Scholarships in Art.
Millsaps’ studio program emphasizes experimentation
in the two-dimensional mediums of drawing, painting, printmaking,
and photography. Three-dimensional conceptualizing and production
are explored in sculpture courses. Technical proficiency and creative
expression are seen as closely linked; students are challenged to
find something meaningful to say and an appropriate mode in which
to communicate that idea or emotion or vision.
Senior Studio Art Project
Under the guidance of the studio faculty, every
Millsaps studio art major does an independent senior project. Each
student develops a cohesive body of work for public exhibition,
as well as supporting documentation that both investigates and augments
the work for exhibition. Studio space for seniors and some juniors
is available on campus. The project includes a paper, a gallery
talk, and an oral examination with a committee formed of the faculty
of the art department.
