If you've got talent, we want to hear from you!

Friday, January 15, 2010

Millsaps Fine Arts DayMillsaps is pleased to offer talent-based scholarships to students interested in the fine arts and the performing arts. Scholarships are awarded based on an audition and the student's application for admission. Declaring a major or minor in a particular academic discipline is not required for most of these awards.

Complete a scholarship application form to participate in our Music, Theater or Art Scholarship Competition. Send the application to Millsaps College Admissions two weeks prior to your audition date. You will then receive a confirmation via mail or e-mail with the audition time, directions and practice information.

Audition Guidelines:

Vocal
Vocalists should prepare three songs of contrasting styles from memory. Art songs are recommended. If possible, present at least one song in a language other than English. An accompanist will be provided. Please send sheet music to the department prior to audition.

Piano/Organ
Pianists/organists should prepare three pieces of contrasting styles from memory. It is recommended to have at least Baroque and 20th century pieces represented. Please provide sheet music for the faculty to follow during the audition.

Instrumentalists
Orchestral instrumentalists are recommended to have a movement from a concerto, an etude, and another piece of their choice. An accompanist will be provided upon request. These guidelines are also applicable for guitar auditions. Contrasting pieces from different periods are preferred.

Theatre
Actors should prepare two modern, two-minute monologues of contrasting styles. Following the monologue presentations, actors will engage in a brief interview and conversation with theatre faculty and students.

Students wishing to pursue design and technical theatre should submit a portfolio of theatre work or artwork, and be prepared to interview with theatre faculty. The portfolio should display the applicant’s range of talents and abilities as an artist or technician, and have a minimum of five plates or slides. Copies of stage management prompt books with brief resumes are acceptable in lieu of portfolio submissions.

Art Portfolio Requirements
Your portfolio should consist of eight to twelve original works in any medium, showing a range of your abilities and a sense of your development as an artist. If you are unable to come to campus on Fine Arts Day, you may either send your portfolio or a folder of slides, along with this application, to Office of Admissions, Millsaps College, 1701 N State Street, Jackson, Mississippi 39210-0001.
