STERLING,
Va. – Four days after being named to the D3hoops.com
All-South Region First Team along with teammate Lorenzo Bailey on
the Third Team, senior forward Edrick Montgomery has been
named to the D3Hoops.com
All-American Second Team, becoming the first
Millsaps selection in the All-American program's 11-year history.
Montgomery's second
team selection placed him amongst the Top 10 players in Division III
basketball during the 2007-08 campaign, as he represented the Southern
Collegiate Athletic Conference as the only All-American selection of
the year.
The selection for
the 6-foot-6, 220-pound senior follows up a handful of awards won during
the Majors' dramatical run through the NCAA Tournament, being named
First Team All-SCAC, SCAC Tournament MVP, Millsaps All-Regional Team,
Wash U All-Sectional Team, D3hoops.com All-South Region First Team
and NABC All-District Second Team.
Montgomery led the
Majors (28-4, 13-2 SCAC) to their first SCAC Tournament Title in the
tournament's 5-year history, averaging 21.7 points and 8.3 rebounds
during the 3-day stretch to defeat Rhodes, Hendrix and then 2nd-ranked
Centre College for the title. It was Millsaps' first SCAC Championship
since the 2000-01 season and third-ever.
In the NCAA Tournament,
Montgomery continued his dominating play on the court to help Millsaps
win its first Tournament game since 1996, knocking off one of the hottest
teams in the country at the time (Maryville College, TN) who was riding
a 17-game winning streak. Montgomery scored 20 of his game-high 28
points in the second half on 9-of-13 shoting to finish the night with
28 points and seven rebounds.
After surviving Mary
Hardin-Baylor a night later in Jackson, 57-56, on a Chad Songy buzzer-beater
to go to St. Louis, Montgomery led Millsaps with 27 points and a season-high
20 boards in the Majors' Sweet Sixteen win over St. Mary's College
of
Maryland to propel them to their first Elite Eight appearance in school
history. Millsaps lost one day later, 57-46, to the 11th-ranked Bears
of Wash U (St. Louis) who eventually went on to win the Title.
A
three-time SCAC Player of the Week and two-time D3hoops.com National
Team of the Week selection, Montgomery ends his stay as Millsaps'
career-leader in rebounds with 761, one better than John Garber who
grabbed 760 boards from 1993-97. He also finishes ranked second all-time
in rebounding average (9.2 rpg), third all-time in blocks (116),
fifth in points (1,383) and seventh in field goals made (552) and
field goals attempted (1,043), while becoming only the seventh player
to score 1,000 career points and grab 500 career boards.
