McCann Earns Spot in SCAC Record Books
Freshman setter from Orlando, Fla., making her presence felt

January 4, 2007

JACKSON -- After closing out the 2006 campaign with a win over Oglethorpe University in the SCAC Western Divisional Tournament and finishing the year at 13-23, first-year setter Sally McCann earned a spot in the conference record books.

A product of Orlando, Fla., who played for Boone High School and the Orlando Volleyball Academy, McCann finished the year ranked No. 1 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference and No. 54 in NCAA Division III in service aces, while fellow teammate and senior Kim Fox finished second in the conference.

“It feels pretty good winning this individual accomplishment,” McCann said. “It shows that my hard work is paying off.”

With the feat, McCann becomes only the second Millsaps volleyball player in SCAC history to lead the conference in service aces, with Jill Adams leading the way with 74 aces in 2001.

She also becomes the first player since Kate Maffei of Rhodes in 1995 to lead the conference in both total service aces (95) and service aces per game (0.79/game).

Millsaps as a team finished the year ranked amongst the top in a pair of statistical categories, ranking No. 1 in the conference in both service aces per game (3.34) and total service aces (408).

With the 3.34 service aces per game, the Majors finished 2006 with the fourth highest average in SCAC history and ranked No. 29 in NCAA Division III.

Millsaps only loses two seniors from a very young squad and looks to return a handful of talent in 2007.

“I think the chemistry is there, but it’s a matter of getting the whole team involved and putting more effort into everything we do,” McCann said. “We return five freshmen who all played this year and are expecting to recruit some top athletes who will not only make the team work harder, but will compete for a starting spot.”
