Majors Finish Opening Weekend 3-1 at Rhodes Invitational
Tumminello posts team-high 27 kills and 15 aces in first collegiate competition

September 1, 2008

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Freshman Maggie Tumminello posted a team-best 27 kills and 15 aces in her first collegiate competition to help pace Millsaps to a 3-1 record at the Rhodes College Invitational in its opening weekend of the season.

Millsaps started the year off right with a convincing 3-set win against St. Catherine by scores of 25-10, 25-11 and 25-9, hitting a weekend high .309 from the floor with 34 kills. The Majors were led by sophomore Kate Hall who hit .562 and slammed 10 kills, while Tumminello added 12 aces in her first match.

Concordia provided a little more competition for Millsaps in its second match of the tournament despite a 3-0 sweep (25-22, 26-24, 25-19), holding the Majors to a .101 clip after 16 attack errors. Senior Toni Manley picked up two blocks en route to five in the match, while Dixie Krauss and Hailey Miranda each had double digit digs.

In the final day of action on Sunday afternoon, Millsaps faced its first 4-set match of the year in a hard fought 3-1 (26-24, 25-13, 19-25, 25-18) win over UT-Tyler. The Majors won the opening two sets of the match, including a 2-point win in the opening set, before dropping their first of the season after 8-straight 25-19.

Tumminello posted the first double-double of her career with 12 kills and 11 digs, while Krauss had a season high 19 digs. Senior Sarah Exley and sophomore Victoria Romano also added eight kills apiece in the win.

Physically worn down from four matches in a matter of 24 hours, Piedmont finally handed the Majors their first loss of the year in the closer, 25-15, 25-18 and 25-17, after forcing them into a combined 21 errors.

No Major had more than three kills, while being limited to just three aces 39 in previous three matches and their attack percentage was held in check.

After a successful opening weekend, Millsaps will look to try and keep up the pace as they host their first tournament this weekend in Jackson. The Majors will welcome Reinhardt, East Texas Baptist, Spring Hill and Belhaven to The Hangar Dome for the annual Millsaps Invitational on Sept. 5 and 6.
