COLORADO
SPRINGS, Colo.
-- In
their first conference competition of the season,
the Millsaps women's volleyball team dropped
3 of 4 matches to three of the nation's
Top 15 teams in the Central-West Divisional, with the only win
coming over Hendrix College in a 3-0 affair on Saturday.
The Majors opened the weekend with a 3-0 loss to 7th-ranked Trinity
(9-1, 1-0 SCAC) on Friday, falling by scores of
15-30, 14-30 and 27-30.
On the stat sheet, freshman Kate Hall led the Majors in kills with
nine while sophomore libero Dixie Krauss racked up 15 digs and freshman
Mallory
Clark
added nine digs. Freshman Hailey Miranda (pictured below) led
the squad with 15 set assists and Clark contributed nine.
Friday's nightcap paired Millsaps with No. 15 Southwestern
University (8-1, 1-1 SCAC), with the Pirates coming out on top in
three 30-15, 30-20 and 30-17 to earn their first league win of the
year.
Clark (.250) and senior Ani Babinski (.231) led the Majors in attack
percentage for the match, combining for eight of Millsaps' 26 kills,
while Miranda (nine) and freshman Erica Cook (eight) led the team
in digs. Freshman Victoria Romano also had a nice night at the net,
picking up three of the Majors' five team blocks.
Millsaps battled with No. 12 Austin (9-2, 1-2 SCAC) before falling
30-26 in Game 1 on Saturday, followed up with 21-30 and 19-30 losses
in the subsequent games.
In the weekend closer against Hendrix (3-5, 0-4 SCAC), the Majors
snapped a 6-game losing skid but paid the price on the court when
Krauss and Cook collided in the final game of a 3-0 (30-27, 31-29,
30-27) Millsaps win.
With the Majors leading 8-6 in Game 3 and leading the match 2-0,
the two were both going for a ball when they collided and had to
be sidelined. Sophomore Amanda Cain was called in to replace Cook
midway through the game while Babinski and the rest of the team stepped
up and held on for their first SCAC win of the year.
Hall and fellow freshman Heather Keenan caught fire in the final
match of the weekend, combining for 24 of the Majors' 43 kills while
hitting .409 and .500 from the floor. Keenan also picked up a team-high
three service aces whereas junior Sarah Exley had a solid all-around
performance with eight digs, six kills, three blocks and an ace.
The Majors will try
and get back on the right track Thursday at Loyola-New Orleans before
another weekend tournament in Pensacola, Fla., where they will face
off with Clearwater Christian, Tennessee Temple, Florida College
and Wesley College.
Millsaps will not play another home match until
Oct. 10 versus Rust.
