Millsaps Falls to No. 17 Trinity, tops Hendrix in nightcap

September 23, 2006

JACKSON - The Millsaps women’s volleyball team split its opening two matches of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Western Divisional Tournament on Friday, falling to No. 17 Trinity 3-0 and bouncing back to top Hendrix College 3-1 in the nightcap.

Trinity University (9-4, 2-0 SCAC) showed why they are one of the top volleyball teams in Division III, downing the Majors 30-16, 30-10 and 30-15 before an estimated crowd of 100 in the Hangar Dome.

The Tigers were led by Sara Buros’ 13 kills, Caroline Keener’s 19 assists, Aly Hazelwood’s four blocks and Leah Goldstein’s 14 digs.

Millsaps (7-6, 1-1) was led offensively by Colleen Kelly’s four kills, followed by Kim Fox and Toni Manley with three apiece. On the defensive side, Fox led the way with nine digs, while freshmen Dixie Krauss and Sam Hill each contributed seven.

In the nightcap, the Majors pushed their conference record to 1-1 by defeating Hendrix College (6-7, 0-2) in an exciting four-game match, 30-23, 30-28, 22-30 and 30-24.

Senior outside hitters Kelly and Fox provided solid performances for the Majors, combining for only three errors the entire match, while teaming up for 37 of the total 52 team kills and 27 digs.

Krauss, the freshman libero from West Palm Beach, Fla., had a tremendous game for Millsaps as well. Along with teammates Kelly and Fox, Krauss contributed 18 digs.

Millsaps as a team improved each game on its attacks-per-game percentage, going from a .152 percentage in game one to .189, .292 and .275 by game four.

The Majors look to improve on their conference record Saturday, facing two of the nation’s top teams in No. 9 Southwestern at 1:30 p.m. and No. 15 Austin College at 4 p.m.
