JACKSON
- Millsaps
entered Saturday’s doubleheader with high hopes of knocking
off one of the two top-ranked teams in the nation and the Southern
Collegiate Athletic Conference, but it wouldn’t be the
case as the Majors dropped a pair of 3-0 matches to No. 9 Southwestern
and No. 15 Austin College.
Millsaps (7-8, 1-3 SCAC) opened its Saturday doubleheader with
three consecutive 30-17 losses to No. 9 Southwestern, a team
who had a solid weekend en route to a 3-1 record.
The Majors were led offensively by seniors Colleen Kelly and
Kim Fox. Fox had 12 kills to go along with two service aces,
while Kelly contributed 10 kills in 23 attempts for a .348
kill percentage.
On the defensive side Fox and freshman libero Dixie Krauss
each contributed six digs, while Kelly led all Majors with
seven. First-year sophomore Toni Manley held her ground at
the net, chipping in three blocks (one solo).
As a team the Majors just couldn’t get things to click,
as their attacks-per-game percentage declined each game and
their errors gradually increased.
In the afternoon finale, Millsaps took on a hungry No. 15 Austin
College team who was anxious for its first win of the weekend.
The Kangaroos got just that, downing the Majors 30-16, 30-25
and 30-15 to earn their first victory of the tournament and
in conference play.
Krauss had another strong game defensively for Millsaps, posting
double-digit digs with 13, while the Birmingham, Ala., freshman
Sam Hill added eight. The Majors also picked up four total
team blocks.
Despite dropping a three game match, Millsaps as a team improved
offensively each game in its attacks-per-game percentage, including
two games with double-digit kills.
The Majors next home match is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept.
26, when they play host to cross-town rival Belhaven College.
Game time is slated for 7 p.m. in the Hall Activities Center
and will feature a Raising Cane’s promotion which entitles
the largest campus organization/group to a free tray of chicken
tenders.
