Millsaps Knocks Off Dillard in Five-Game Match
Majors improve to 12-19 overall with 3-2 victory

October 29, 2006

JACKSON -- After falling to Belhaven College 21-30, 25-30, 24-30 on Thursday night at Charles R. Rugg Arena, the Majors got a thrilling five-game win over Dillard University (La.) Saturday at Belhaven to improve to 12-19 on the season.

The game for Millsaps was a make up game for the cancelled Freed-Hardeman contest on Sept. 30 and was played on a neutral site (Belhaven College).

The Majors used a team-high 19 kills each from senior co-captains Colleen Kelly and Kim Fox, while Ani Babinski hit .133, to knock off the Lady Blue Devils in thrilling fashion.

Freshman Sally McCann had a solid game offensively as well, contributing 52 set assists and two service aces to run her conference-leading season total to 87 aces on the year. Fox is second in the conference with 55, while Trinity’s Leah Goldstein rounds out the Top 3 with 46 aces.

Defensively for Millsaps, Fox and Kelly combined for 66 of the total 123 team digs, while freshman libero Dixie Krauss had a solid game as well adding 24 for the match.

After falling to the Lady Blue Devils 30-25 in Game 1, Millsaps rallied to win games two and three 30-27 and 30-24 before Dillard tied it at 2-2 with a Game 4 win.

The match went to a deciding fifth game where the Majors pulled out the 15-13 victory to win the contest 3-2.

“We showed a lot of heart in Game 5,” head coach Matt Linebarger said.  “Dillard played tough and dug a lot of balls, but we came up with the crucial points at the right times for the win.”

Millsaps looks to build on its win over Dillard, playing the remaining games of the season on the road, as they travel to Atlanta, Ga., Nov. 3-5 to compete in the SCAC Western Divisional Tournament.
