Linebarger to lead VB Lady Majors in 2005

Matthew J. Linebarger has joined Millsaps College and the Department of Athletics as head coach for the Majors women’s volleyball team, in an announcement made by Millsaps College Director of Athletics Ron Jurney, Friday. Linebarger will also serve as the head strength and conditioning coach for Majors seven women’s athletic teams.

“We’re excited about Matt accepting the head volleyball coaching job,” said Jurney. “He brings tremendous enthusiasm and knowledge of the game. He’s been fortunate enough to be around some quality Division I coaches and learned well from them and he is anxious to demonstrate some of his own coaching skills at Millsaps College.

Linebarger comes to Millsaps College after serving as a graduate assistant women’s volleyball coach at the University of Louisiana-Monroe for one year. Linebarger handled most recruiting duties for the Indians and also worked as graduate assistant in the Department of Kinesiology. Responsible for academic support for the Indians, Linebarger’s squad posted a 3.1 overall GPA.

As an undergraduate assistant volleyball coach at Florida State University from 2000-02 Linebarger served in recruiting operations for the Seminoles nationally prominent program that advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2002. Linebarger was awarded the 2001 Athletic Director’s Cup for Service. In addition to directing summer and satellite volleyball camps, Linebarger recruited and signed two of the top 50 volleyball players in the nation to Tallahassee.

Linebarger also coached the 2002 Gulf Coast Champions at the Orlando Volleyball Academy and he served as a fitness instructor and sales representative at the Monroe Athletic Club.

Linebarger inherits a 20-11 Majors team that finished tied for fifth in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference in 2004. Senior outside hitter Ashley Weber and junior outside hitter Colleen Kelly were both named to the All-SCAC team in 2004 for the Majors, who upset a nationally ranked Southwestern University team.

Linebarger received his bachelor of science from FSU in 2002 and his master of science from ULM in 2005. Linebarger’s professional affiliations include the National Collegiate Athletic Association and the American Volleyball Coaches Association.
