The Millsaps volleyball team released its 2006 schedule today
and the Majors will face three teams that competed in the 2004
NCAA Tournament as well as a Division I program both home and
away.
"We've seen some great improvement during our spring
training," said
Coach Matt Linebarger, who will lead the Majors for the second
season in 2006, "so I'm excited to see what this group will
do once we hit the court in September. With our veterans and
a great group of newcomers, I expect a lot out of our team this
year."
The Majors ended the season with a 15-19 overall record and an
8-10 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) mark. The
Majors finished the year sixth in the league race. Six letter
winners return next year, including outside hitter Kim Fox and
Colleen Kelly who enter their senior campaign. Millsaps loses
the program's All SCAC Team members, Ashley Weber, Jen Pujol
as well as Liz Blanche who was a four-year letterman. However,
starting libero Keisha Keyes is back in '06 along with, opposite
Sarah Exley and sophomore middle Toni Manley, will begin her
collegiate campaign.
Millsaps opens the 2006 season on September 1-3 at the Oglethorpe
Classic in Atlanta with Guilford, Agnes Scott, Dallas and North
Central (IL). The Majors will take the court Saturday September
2 against Guilford at 11:00 a.m. and Agnes Scott at 4:00 p.m. Sunday
September 3 Millsaps will wrap up the weekend with matches against
Dallas at 11:00 a.m. and North Central at 1:00p.m.
On September 8-9, the Majors will host the Millsaps Invitational,
with Fisk, Mississippi College, Huston-Tilloston and East Texas
Baptist. The Majors take on Fisk Friday, September 8 at 4:30 p.m.
before battling the MC Choctaws that night at 7:30 p.m. Saturday,
September 9, Millsaps closes out the weekend with matches against
Huston-Tilloston and East Texas Baptist. ETBU finished second to
#23 Austin College in American Southwest Conference final standings
in 2005.
After an away contest against Division I opponent Alcorn State
on September 13, the Majors will gear up for a competitive home
weekend, playing Wesley College on September 15 at 2:30pm and University
of Mobile at 5:30pm. The following weekend, September 22-23, Millsaps
will host the first SCAC Divisional Tournament of the year. The
Majors will take on Trinity and Hendrix on Friday and Southwestern
and newcomer, Austin College on Saturday.
Trinity, Southwestern
and Austin College advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2005. Austin
defeated Trinity in the second round before falling to national
powerhouse Emory in the south regional finals.
Twenty contests are planned for the last week of September and
the months of October and November for the Majors.
One goal of the team is a trip to the NCAA tournament in 2006.
Post-season play begins November 9-11 with first-round and second-round
matches on the site of participating institutions. The 2006 NCAA
Championship will be held in Salem, Virginia, on November 16 and
18.
