Alpha
Sigma Lambda National Honor Society is a nonprofit organization
devoted to the advancement of scholarship and to the recognition
of nontraditional students continuing their higher education.
The Society was established in 1945-46 to honor superior scholarship
and leadership in adult students.
Today,
with nearly 250 institutional chapters throughout the United States,
ASL presents institutions with a truly prestigious opportunity to
recognize the special achievements of adults who accomplish academic
excellence, while facing competing interests of family, community,
and work.
For
the nontraditional student, the Society stands as an inspiration
for continuing scholastic growth, a builder of pride through recognition,
and an invitation to associate with similarly motivated students.
For the chapter institution, the Society serves as a vehicle for
imparting appreciation for adult students' academic achievements
and contributions. Also, the Society has been found to aid
immensely in the recruitment and retention of nontraditional/adult
students.
In
the winter of 1945, Dr. Rollin B. Posey, Dean of University College
at Northwestern University realized that measure of encouragement
and recognition accorded to adult students at an early stage of
their programs could provide the thrust to achieve their educational
objectives.
To
this day Alpha Sigma Lambda is not only the oldest but also the
largest chapter-based honor society for full- & part-time adult
students.
