New South Hall

New South Hall,
one of the newest residence halls on campus, was built in 1995. Landscaped
with magnolias, crepe myrtles, and ornamental grasses, this residence hall is located in
a park-like setting on the south side of campus, near all other upperclassmen
dorms and fraternity row. The building has convenient parking
directly adjacent and a nearby grassy area with benches and picnic tables
where students can congregate. New South Hall also has the largest residential
study/lounge area at Millsaps. This area is complete with couches, chairs,
and tables, offering a quiet environment for studying or relaxing. The building
features a central laundry facility that also contains drink and snack machines.
The residence hall,
which houses upperclass men and women, is separated into two wings. One
wing, nicknamed "the hall," contains large bedrooms shared by
two students each, with four students sharing a bathroom. The other wing,
nicknamed "the atrium," consists of suite style bedrooms and two
added living room areas shared between four students (juniors and seniors).
In these floor plans, each student has his or her own bedroom. Between the
two wings, New South comprises more than 48,000 square feet of
living space.
The beige-colored rooms
have a large lighted closet and other basic furniture: a desk, chair, dresser,
and bed for each occupant. The large rooms make it easy to move in and rearrange
furniture, and all rooms have internet access and a telephone line with
voicemail connections, caller identification, and call waiting. New South
Hall features elevators and handicapped-accessible rooms, and a convenient
newspaper kiosk allows students to easily stay informed about local and
national events.
