Millsaps Ranked Among Best Liberal Arts Colleges by U.S. News & World Report

Millsaps College is the top-ranked national liberal arts college in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama, according to rankings in U.S. News & World Report's 2013 Best Colleges guidebook and Forbes' most recent list of America's 650 Top Colleges. See U.S. News & World Report's profile of Millsaps College and Forbes' profile of Millsaps College.

Overall, Millsaps is ranked No. 90 among the country's 251 national liberal arts colleges as determined by U.S. News & World Report. Millsaps was ranked No. 122 out of the top 650 academic institutions in the nation as listed by Forbes.

"National rankings do not convey the full picture at any college or university, but we are always pleased to have the outstanding value of a Millsaps education recognized by others," said Dr. Robert W. Pearigen, president of Millsaps College.

"The faculty and staff at Millsaps College work hard to ensure we thrive as a community of scholars pursuing excellence for, and along with, our students. Whether our graduates work locally or around the globe, their focus on excellence and their lives of meaning and service strengthen their communities."

U.S. News & World Report considers a national liberal arts college one that draws students from across the nation, emphasizes undergraduate education, and awards at least half its degrees in the arts and sciences, which include such disciplines as English, the biological sciences, physics, chemistry, history, political science, foreign languages, and the visual and performing arts.

"While liberal arts is grounded in the classical study of the humanities, arts, and sciences and in exposure to the best that has been thought and written and performed throughout history, it also develops skills that are essential for a successful and meaningful life - skills related to critical thinking, communication, reasoning, risk-taking, and personal relationships," said Pearigen. "Along with a broad-based education, these skills make for individuals who are interesting, well-rounded, intellectually curious, and civic minded - the 'complete package.'"
