Dr. Ed Thompson, state health officer, will deliver a free public lecture as part of Millsaps College’s Moreton Lecture Series on Tuesday, April 15, at 7 p.m. in Room 215 of the Ford Academic Complex. A graduate of Millsaps, Dr. Thompson was appointed to the position in December 2007 by the Mississippi State Board of Health. He served as state health officer from 1993 to 2002 and was named interim state health officer in July 2007. During the lecture, he will discuss some of Mississippi’s pressing public health problems such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, high infant mortality and low birth-weight babies; and infectious diseases including teenage sexually transmitted diseases and tuberculosis.
The Moreton Lectures were established in 1986 by Robert and Alma Moreton. This series of lectures in the sciences is marked by experts with national reputations.
