Millsaps Players to Present "The Music Man"

(04/09/08)

To be presented April 17-20, 2008
Reverend John Ed Thomas III

The Millsaps Players will present Meredith Willson’s beloved play “The Music Man” Thursday through Sunday, April 17-20. The musical will take place in the Christian Center Auditorium on the Millsaps College campus at 7:30 p.m. from Thursday to Saturday and at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $10 general admission and $8 for seniors and students. For more information, contact Linda Nix at 601-974-1422.

An affectionate homage to the Smalltown, USA, of a bygone era, Willson’s musical follows the fast-talking traveling salesman Harold Hill as he cons the people of River City, Iowa, into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys band he vows to organize—despite the fact that he doesn’t know a trombone from a treble clef. His plans to skip town with the cash are foiled when he falls for Marian the librarian, who transforms him into a respectable citizen by curtain’s fall. By turns wickedly funny, romantic and touching, “The Music Man” is family entertainment at its best.

Several Jackson-area children will join the Millsaps Players as boys from the town, while Jeannie Marie Brown, assistant professor of theater, directs. With such favorites as “76 Trombones,” “Til There Was You” and “Ya Got Trouble,” “The Music Man” has something for everyone.
