The 40th season of the Millsaps Arts & Lecture Series presents scientific innovator Dr. John Rather on Tuesday, February 19. The program will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Ford Academic Complex Recital Hall. Tickets are $10 general admission at the door, and students will be admitted free. In the 90s, Congress appointed Dr. Rather chair of a panel to provide a study on the potential for a catastrophic asteroid collision with Earth and the resulting impact. His lecture at Millsaps, Astronomy and Space Development in the 21st Century, will be a fascinating look at what issues we can expect in astronomy in the coming years.
Dr. Rather has worked in physics and astrophysics research and was in the senior executive service of the United States government at NASA headquarters. Since 1997 he has worked extensively on applications of physics to the detection and cure of cancer, and the mission of his new company is to create, develop and license technologies with high levels of impact for science, medicine and commerce. He currently has seven U.S. patents to his name, with more pending.
