Teachers of Advanced Placement or Pre-Advanced Placement courses will learn how to implement successful advanced placement courses and strengthen existing courses during the AP Summer Teacher Institute at Millsaps College in Jackson.
Scheduled for July 13—18, the institute will offer beginning AP teachers workshops in biology, calculus AP, chemistry, English literature and composition, U.S. history and world history. Also offered will be English literature and composition for experienced AP teachers and economics – macro and micro (combined). Pre-AP vertical teams training in English and pre-AP vertical teams training in mathematics will also be offered.
Last year, 343 teachers attended the institute that was taught by 15 College Board endorsed consultants, said Wanda Manor, program coordinator at Millsaps. Millsaps began offering the AP Summer Teacher Institute in 1983 and is among two colleges and universities in the state that provide AP teacher workshops, she said.
The state Department of Education requires teachers of AP courses attend a College Board endorsed AP training workshop, she said.
Richard Smith, senior vice president and dean of the college, said the Millsaps AP Institute trains not only teachers but boosts the state’s educational system.
“Over the past decade, the institute has trained hundreds of high school teachers to offer AP courses, which in turn has significantly strengthened the curricula in dozens of school districts,” he said. “As a result, thousands of high school students have been challenged to perform at their highest levels and have entered college far more prepared to excel than they would have otherwise.”
The Millsaps AP Summer Teacher Institute is co-sponsored by The College Board Southern Regional Office.
