Howard Bavender, a college professor of legendary teaching skills, died on Friday, October 31 of natural causes in Washington, DC. He was 88. Professor Bavender's interment with military ceremony was held in Arlington National Cemetery on Thursday, January 22, 2009.
Professor Bavender taught political science at Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi from 1966 until 1990.
His life was his students and during his time at Millsaps he inspired thousands of students who were fortunate enough to sit in one of his classes.
He was raised in Toppenish, Washington and received an undergraduate degree from the College of Idaho. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and was a captain in the Air Force during the Korean War. He received his M.A. at the University of Wisconsin and did additional graduate work at the University of Texas and New York University.
Professor Bavender is survived by no known family members but he lives on in the students whose lives he touched, lifted and changed in so many ways. Memorial gifts may be made to the Howard Bavender Scholarship Fund at Millsaps College.
