Millsaps College Offers New Business Program for Young Professionals

A new program offered by The Else School of Management at Millsaps College is designed to teach young professionals who lack formal business training the basic business principles needed to succeed in any profession.

The Business Advantage Program, a 14-week course providing a fundamental understanding of economics, accounting, finance, marketing and management, will be offered for the first time in the fall 2009 semester. The engaging curriculum is presented by Else School faculty and is designed to give students real insight into the business world with case studies and visiting business leaders.

“There aren’t many programs like this,” said Blakely Fender, associate professor of economics and head of the program.

Examples of professionals who would benefit from the program include the medical professional who is ready to open a practice but wary of the business knowledge needed to run a successful small business or a manager looking to move up the corporate ladder who doesn’t have the resources or desire to pursue a higher degree.

“This is not a substitute for the M.B.A. degree,” Fender said. “It is designed to give you a “leg-up” in the business world by offering an intense look at business to show how you can improve your career outlook, market a new product or business or better manage employees.”

The program costs $4,500 and will meet two nights a week plus three Saturdays over one semester. Significant scholarships are available, and many employers will cover some or all of the cost. For more information visit millsaps.edu/esom/bap or call 601-974-1250.
