ELSE SCHOOL RANKED NO. 8 FOR BEST PROFESSORS IN PRINCETON REVIEW'S “BEST 282 BUSINESS SCHOOLS: 2007 EDITION”

(7/24/06)

The Millsaps College Charles W. Else and Eloise T. Else School of Management is an outstanding business school, according to The Princeton Review. The New York-based education services company selected the school for inclusion in the 2007 edition of its book, “Best 282 Business Schools” (Random House / Princeton Review Books, $22.95). Millsaps College's Else School is ranked No. 8 in the category “Best Professors,” just above Harvard and Duke. The Else School is one of 45 schools that The Princeton Review is adding to its annual "best business schools" guide this year.

According to Robert Franek, VP / Publisher, Princeton Review, "We select schools for this book based on several criteria covering three areas: our regard for their academic programs and other offerings, institutional data we collect about them, and opinions of students attending the schools.  We are very pleased to feature the Millsaps College Else School of Management in our book.  We highly commend it to readers of the book and users of our website as one of the best institutions they could attend to earn an MBA."

“Best 282 Business Schools” has two-page profiles of the schools with write-ups on their academics, student life and admissions, plus ratings for their academics, selectivity and career placement services.   The book also has 11 ranking lists of the top 10 business schools in various categories from "Toughest to Get Into" to "Best Career Prospects" (the Princeton Review does not name a best business school overall or rank the schools in the book from 1 to 282).  The book's ratings and rankings are based on institutional data from the schools and on The Princeton Review's surveys of more than 18,000 students attending the schools profiled in the book.  The survey asked students about themselves and their career plans, as well as their schools’ academics, student body and campus life.

"Best 282 Business Schools” is one of more than 200 Princeton Review books published by Random House.  The line includes Princeton Review guides to the best law schools, medical schools, and colleges, plus guides to college and graduate school admission exams.  The Princeton Review (www.princetonreview.com) is also known for its test-prep courses and other admission and K-12 education services.   The company is not affiliated with Princeton University.

MILLSAPS RECEIVES ACCOLADES FROM NATIONAL COLLEGE GUIDES

(8/25/06)

Millsaps College has once again captured top national rankings in the most influential college guides. U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges,” “The Fiske Guide to Colleges,” “The Insider’s Guide to Colleges” and The Princeton Review’s “The Best 361 Colleges” all highlight Millsaps in their 2007 reviews. Millsaps College’s Else School of Management was also included in The Princeton Review’s separate publication “The Best 282 Business Schools.”

U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges” placed Millsaps at No. 82 in the top 212 liberal arts institutions in the country, establishing the College as the only Mississippi institution in the top tier of national colleges and as one of the leading institutions in the South.

U.S. News previously commended Millsaps for having a notable “Writing in the Disciplines” program, recognizing the College for making writing “a priority at all levels of instruction and across the curriculum.” Millsaps was listed in this category with 16 other colleges and universities, including Amherst, Harvard and Duke.

Each year, “The Fiske Guide to Colleges” compiles and describes “more than 300 of the best and most interesting institutions in the nation.” The guide listed Millsaps College—the only school in Mississippi to be included—under “Small Colleges and Universities Strong in Business” and under “inexpensive” relative to its liberal arts peers throughout the nation. It also said that “what differentiates the school is its focus on scholarly inquiry, spiritual growth, and community service.”

“The Insider’s Guide to Colleges” contains profiles of 322 top colleges and universities in the U.S. and Canada. Its profile of Millsaps noted that “students across the board were impressed by the openness of students to new ideas and to different types of people,” and that “a major selling point for many students is the small size of the classes.”

Only the top 15 percent of the four-year colleges in America are included in The Princeton Review’s “The Best 361 Colleges.” In its profile of Millsaps, The Princeton Review described the school as "a quality liberal arts college with Southern charm" and said that “it’s hard to find an undergraduate dissatisfied with the academic experience at this small gem of a school in Jackson.” The profile also quoted Millsaps students surveyed for the book. One student summed up the Millsaps experience: “The classes are not too big, the instructors love what they do (and do it well), upperclassmen are helpful, and the out-of-class experience is fun.”

Millsaps was ranked 16th in the survey’s “Town-Gown Relations Are Great” category, recognizing the harmonious relationship between the college community and the Jackson community, and was also included in the list of “Best Southeastern Colleges.” In past years, Princeton Review has also acknowledged Millsaps for “Class Discussions Encouraged” and as a “Best Value.”

Colleges of Distinction (www.collegesofdistinction.com) has also selected Millsaps for its listings. The site takes into consideration four criteria when looking at colleges: engaged students, great teaching, vibrant community and successful outcomes.

Several other recent guidebooks also include praise for Millsaps. Barron’s “Best Buys in College Education” said: “Bottom line: Millsaps is a college for high school graduates serious about learning and about having a full social life.” The John Templeton Foundation’s “Colleges That Encourage Character Development” included Millsaps among the schools it lists that promote character education and that inspire students toward an ethical and civic-minded education.

“Great Colleges of the Real World,” which “explores the new breed of ‘consumer oriented’ colleges,” included Millsaps as one of only two listed colleges in Mississippi. Kaplan’s “Unofficial, Unbiased Guide to the Most Interesting Colleges” cited Millsaps College’s Faith & Work program in its guide. Loren Pope’s “Colleges That Change Lives” praised Millsaps over the course of eight pages, commending the College’s Phi Beta Kappa chapter, forest preserve in Yucatan, history of Rhodes Scholars and more.

“Every college has dissatisfied students and those who shouldn’t be there,” writes Pope, “but I didn’t run into any at Millsaps."
