Millsaps College proudly announces that two of its students from Louisiana have been named 2006 Undergraduate Fellows by the Fund for Theological Education (FTE). John Kellogg, a junior from Shreveport, and Chris Spear, a senior from Slidell, are two of 70 talented students from across the country who have been awarded a fellowship as part of the Fund’s efforts to encourage gifted young people to explore ministry as a vocation.
FTE Undergraduate Fellowships are awarded annually to help improve the supply, quality and diversity of young candidates for ministry. The 2006 FTE Undergraduate Fellows represent 24 denominations, 59 graduate educational institutions, and diverse racial/ethnic backgrounds.
“We are so delighted that John and Chris, both exceptional students, have received fellowships from the Fund for Theological Education,” said Millsaps President Frances Lucas. “Congregations worldwide face a potential shortage of young ordained clergy, so we applaud this effort to increase ministerial opportunities for our youth. Millsaps students are exposed to a variety of religions and cultures, and our diversity is a source of great pride.”
Fellows must hold a 3.0 cumulative grade point average, demonstrate gifts for leadership and be a junior or senior at an accredited college or university. Kellogg and Spear will each receive a $1,500 stipend for educational expenses—or a special experience related to ministry—and additional funds to support a mentoring relationship. Undergraduate Fellowships also cover expenses to attend the FTE Conference on Excellence in Ministry, “The Promise of Ministry,” held this summer at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Austin, Texas.
Kellogg, a junior at Millsaps College, is a psychology major from Shreveport, and Spear, a Slidell native, is senior majoring in English.
