Milsaps College to Present Homer Marathon

(9/29/07)

Maybe you read “The Iliad” in high school and saw “Troy” in the theater, but you haven’t experienced Homer’s epic as it was intended to be experienced until you’ve heard a rhapsodist perform it in Greek. Millsaps College is providing that opportunity on Friday, October 12, and Saturday, October 13. For more information, contact Catherine Freis at 601-974-1296.

Mark Miner is a traveling rhapsodist who aspires to perform Homer in all 50 states. At the Friday Forum on October 12, he will perform sections of “The Iliad” in its original language, from memory. Millsaps College students will also read sections of the work in translation. The reading starts at 12:30 p.m. in the Bowl on campus.

After the Friday Forum, the reading will continue with a Homer Marathon—a continuous reading of all 24 books of “The Iliad.” Community members are welcome to volunteer to read, in English, 15-30 minute segments of the epic poem, and everyone may come and go as they please throughout the reading. These marathons generally take 18 hours, and this particular event will continue until 11 p.m. on Friday night, before starting up again Saturday morning at 9 a.m.

To sign up to read a section, call 601-974-1130 or visit room 100 of the Ford Academic Complex.
