| Robert H. Padgett, 77, emeritus professor of English at Millsaps College, died Tuesday, November 28, at Central Mississippi Medical Center. A memorial service honoring his life will be held at Noon Monday, December 11, in Fitzhugh Chapel on the Millsaps campus. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Fort Worth, Texas.
A native of Fort Worth, he received a bachelor's degree from Texas Christian University and the master's degree from Vanderbilt University. He was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and studied in Paris, France, for one year.
Mr. Padgett taught English at Millsaps from 1960 until his retirement in 1992, his primary courses being Shakespeare, Modern Drama and Literary Criticism. He was one of the founders of Millsaps’ highly successful Heritage Program, an interdisciplinary humanities program that integrates history, literature, religion, philosophy, and the fine arts into a single elective course of study. He was known as the “chief architect” and first director of the program, which officially began in 1968 and continues today. Each year since his retirement, the English Department has presented the Robert H. Padgett Award for the best comprehensive exam by a graduating English major.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Grace Padgett, and is survived by several cousins.
Memorials can be sent to Millsaps College, Box 151191, Jackson, MS 39210, and designated for the Heritage Program.
