The concert will open with a collection of Japanese folk songs performed by the 70-voice Millsaps Singers and will continue with presentations by the Kaminari Taiko Drummers. Historically used to signal danger and communicate with the heavens, Taiko has become an entertaining music presentation that combines high-energy movements with compelling percussive rhythms. Though rooted in 3,000-year-old Japanese traditions, the powerful sound of Taiko is a living and evolving art form that is permeating contemporary cultures around the world.
Kaminari Taiko was founded in 1996 by a group of talented musicians from diverse backgrounds and ethnicities. Through rigorous training under world-acclaimed Taiko masters, they have refined their technical skills and gone on to collaborate with other world-renowned Taiko groups, performing in more than 20 major cities.
