Job Summary
The Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach supports the head coach by sharing responsibility for the success of the basketball program at Millsaps College. This position supports Millsaps’ NCAA Division III intercollegiate basketball program including recruiting, training, and coaching athletes, assisting with fundraising to augment the program budget and providing support to the Department of Athletics. The Assistant Basketball Coach reports directly to the Head Basketball Coach.
Job Duties
- Comprehend the NCAA Division III philosophy emphasizing academics and athletics;
- Comply with all NCAA Division III, Southern Athletic Association (SAA), and Millsaps College guidelines;
- Recruit and evaluate high school and college athletes within college admissions and NCAA Division III guidelines;
- Provide on-court coaching of athlete skill development;
- Accept game-day administration obligations each semester, if necessary;
- Assist in the planning of practice sessions;
- Monitoring student athlete academic progress by student athletes involving grade reports, study skill development, and counseling;
- Coordinate team travel and logistics, including vehicles, lodging, and meals;
- Assist in scouting opponents;
- Assist with team fundraising programs to augment operations budget
- Maintain parent and alumnae communication;
- Assist with equipment maintenance;
- Participate in various other areas of interest for the College and Athletics
- Other duties as assigned by the Athletic Director or Head Coach
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Exercise and Sports Management, Kinesiology, or a relevant field, or an equivalent mix of education and experience
- 1-3 years of College coaching experience or playing experience
- Desire to continue fostering a strong academic and athletic program through creative and educational means
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Able to work in team environments and individually
- Proven ability to promote a positive team environment and cultivate good morale
- Highly organized, creative problem-solver who takes initiative
Physical Requirements
- Able to lift and carry up to 35 pounds without assistance
- Must have a valid state-issued driver’s license
- Must be able to traverse college campus and climb stairs
- Occasional stooping, bending, lifting and reaching are required
- Manual dexterity needed for demonstrating proper form and technique, participating in team practices and other repetitive tasks
