Job Summary
The Director of Athletics is the college’s chief administrator for the intercollegiate athletics programs and works to establish policies and procedures that achieve the parallel goals of development of quality, competitive athletic teams and support of the individual education goals of student-athletes. The Director ensures compliance with applicable National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), athletic conference and colleges policies and regulations governing all facets of intercollegiate athletics programs. The Director supervises a staff of athletic coaches, professional and support personnel, develops and manages operating budgets for the athletics program, and participates in recruiting and fund-raising activities as appropriate.
The Director of Athletics is a member of the President’s Cabinet and reports directly to the President of the College. The Director of Athletics has a dotted line report to the VP of Enrollment for all athletic enrollment and recruiting strategies and activities.
Job Duties
- Provides strategic vision and long-term planning for the Athletics programs and department
- Advises the President and executive staff team on issues relating to the trends, best practices and concerns in intercollegiate athletics, making recommendations regarding the appropriate course of action for the college
- Develops a schedule of intercollegiate athletics contests which supports the established goals for the athletics program and the college
- Coordinates use of athletic facilities including collaboration with the Business Office to complete and maintain vendor contracts
- Ensures quality competition and sportsmanship for and in athletes and coaches
- Develops a competent and effective coaching staff by recruiting and hiring qualified head coaches, providing guidance on policies and coaching philosophy, creating opportunities for professional development, and evaluating and providing feedback regarding performance
- Ensures compliance with National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), athletic conference and college policies and regulations
- Leads the recruitment effort for student athletes and ensures compliance with NCAA rules and regulations regarding financial aid and eligibility by providing guidance and training for the teams’ coaching staffs
- Reviews and approves budgets for the operation of the athletics program including managing budgets for equipment, facility, training or related resource needs, performing budget reconciliations, and exercising final authority over departmental expenditures
- Oversees athletic training and insurance coverage for student athletes, ensuring that it is appropriate for the particular activity being conducted
- Direct, monitor and support media coverage and communication regarding athletic events and recognition of athletes and coaches
- Build and maintain relationships with alumni, donors and athletic booster groups; when necessary, helps with the creation of new or additional support groups for specific teams and events
- Performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution. Master’s degree preferred
- A minimum of 5-7 years of experience in athletics administration, preferably within a National Collegiate Athletic Associate (NCAA) program
- Demonstrated knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations governing recruitment, player eligibility and related functions is required and basic knowledge regarding NCAA division III regulations is preferred
- 3-5 years of experience managing budgets and logistics for athletic programs
- Previous experience coaching at the collegiate level
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Able to work in team environments and individually
- Detail-oriented, highly organized, creative problem-solver who takes initiative
- Ability to quickly learn new technologies and adapt to varying technological environments
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
- Manual dexterity needed for keyboarding and other repetitive tasks
- Must be able to lift and move up to 40 pounds without assistance
- Must be able to traverse various athletic grounds and facilities, climb a latter, stoop, bend and twist as needed
