Grounds Maintenance Crew Leader

Job Summary

This position is responsible for the maintenance of all the college grounds.  This position supervises and participates in the work of a grounds maintenance crew. The role involves planning weekly work schedules, operating light and heavy machinery, and ensuring the maintenance and safety of outdoor areas. The Grounds Maintenance Crew Leader must be able to lift, push, and operate necessary landscape maintenance equipment.  The person in this position reports to the Deputy Director of Facilities Management and should have good communication skills, be able to follow directions, and be in good physical condition.

The position works on-site in Jackson, MS with regular hours from 6:00am – 2:30pm with a half-hour unpaid lunch break.

Job Duties

  • Mowing, weeding, trimming, seeding and related duties in assigned areas
  • Assist with cleaning streets, parking lots, flower beds, grounds areas, etc.
  • Assist with installation and maintenance of irrigation systems
  • Assist in chemical and fertilizer applications on turf, trees, and shrubs
  • Assist with maintenance of synthetic and natural grass athletic fields
  • Delivery and physical set-up/takedown of furniture and equipment for campus events
  • Provide support and manpower as directed to other Facilities Management Departments
  • Some overtime will be required as directed
  • Cultivate collaborative working relationships and a positive rapport with the diverse constituencies across the Millsaps community, including Facilities Management personnel, housekeeping, students, faculty and staff.
  • Communicate problem situations as required in the best interest of clients and Millsaps.
  • Contribute to the success of the Facilities Department by performing all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications 

  • Previous experience with or knowledge of ground maintenance procedures.
  • Knowledge of hand and power tools.
  • Knowledge of heavy and light equipment.
  • Skill in the operation of assigned vehicles, tools, and equipment.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations and communication.
  • Able to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • A valid driver’s license is required.

Physical & Availability Requirements

  • Ability to work flexible hours on a full-time schedule, including some weekends.
  • This position requires the ability to perform various physical tasks without restriction including, but not limited to lifting, sweeping, mopping, climbing ladders, operating equipment, and moving furniture and supplies.
  • Must be able to bend, lift, twist and stand, engage in repetitive motion, and to stand for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift and maneuver heavy items up to 50 pounds without assistance and be able to engage in intense physical activity as needed.
