Research Opportunities

Department of Biology

Students are encouraged to participate in research projects under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Course credit for research may be granted through enrollment in Undergraduate Research or through the Honors Program. The department has excellent facilities to support experimental research and field studies. Internships in local agencies, clinics, and laboratories are also available, as well as summer expeditions.

Research in Molecular and Cellular Biology

Opportunities for research in molecular and cellular biology allow students to work one-on-one with faculty members and other undergraduate students on exciting projects that make real contributions to the body of scientific knowledge in the area of cell cycle control. The department houses a state-of-the-art core molecular biology facility and microscopy facility, both of which have a variety of the most up-to-date equipment available for this type of research.

Research

Supported by the National Institutes of Health National Center for Research Resources and the Mississippi Functional Genomics Network, the program provides funds for supplies, travel, equipment, and student stipends for research activities. Students and faculty who have been involved in the program have published work in leading national and international journals, attended national and international scientific meetings, and have been accepted into some of the best graduate and medical programs in the nation.

Research
Southwestern Field Biology
Southwestern Field Biology offers students the opportunity to study various ecological communities in the Southwestern United States and explore their incredible biodiversity. Both field work and lab based research on desert communities show the students the close relationship between field studies and lab experimentation.
Research
Tropical field Biology
Tropical Field Biology has research opportunities in ornithology, zooarcheology, and paleontology. Kaxil Kiuic, located in the Yucatan, Mexico is a unique living laboratory developed and supported in part by Millsaps College where students do research during the summer months.
