A crowd of new first-year and transfer students filled the Recital Hall of the Gertrude C. Ford Academic Complex on Thursday, August 24 for Academic Convocation. The event marked the official start of the Millsaps College experience for these students, as they heard remarks from College leaders and signed the honor code. They were also formally introduced to the Rev. Joey Shelton, chaplain and director of church relations, and heard a moving anthem performed by the Millsaps Singers under the direction of Jonathan Trotter.
Speakers at the event included Dr. Robert W. Pearigen, president of the College; Noah Barbieri, president of the Student Body Association; and Dr. Eric Griffin, Janice B. Trimble Professor and chair of the English Department, and recipient of the 2017 Distinguished Professor Award. Their remarks reinforced the value of a liberal arts education and the manner in which Millsaps College encourages students to not just learn, but to think.
