I research the intersections of environment, technology, and imperialism in modern world history. My most recent book, The Colonialist: The Vision of Cecil Rhodes, was published by Oxford University Press in 2025. Previously I’ve written books about guns in Southern Africa and sugar cane farming in Mauritius. I’ve authored a general history of the First World War and a popular guide writing about history. Currently, I’m serving as one of the co-editors of the six-volume Bloomsbury Cultural History of Technology.
