"The workshop offered her opportunities to strengthen her writing and develop her personal writing style. "

McMullan Writers Workshop alumni, Fulbright Scholar & Museum Educator

Before Brittany Wilson graduated from Millsaps College, won a Fulbright Scholarship, and taught English in Taiwan, she was a rising high school senior attending the McMullan Writers Workshops in 2019. Brittany describes her writing as a high school student as “emotional and expressive like a run-on sentence,” but the workshop offered opportunities for her to strengthen her writing and develop her personal writing style from “angst-filled poetry to poignant narrative short stories and observational poetry.” Brittany says the writers she met through the workshop fostered growth in her writing by exposing her to a variety of different backgrounds, genres and writing styles—writers who funneled their time, passion, and energy into writing, and who encouraged her passion as a writer.

“Writing wasn’t a poetic journal entry, but writing became my interpretation of my environment.” —Brittany Wilson

Brittany still carries a passion for creative writing, always looking towards her next project. She is currently gathering notes and reflections for a larger piece on her time in Taiwan as an English teacher through the Fulbright Program. She wrote blogs about her experiences teaching, learning, and living as a fun, creative way of staying connected with her friends and family back home. Since returning to Mississippi last July, Brittany has been expanding her creative prowess by experimenting with different forms of written and visual media.

“There’s always more than one way to tell a story, so why not try a few?” —Brittany Wilson

Brittany discovered the McMullan Writers Workshops through a teacher at her high school, and it became her first introduction to Millsaps College. It was because of the workshop that Brittany decided to attend Millsaps College, drawn to the thoughtful lectures, supportive professors and the sense of community among fellow writers she found during the weeklong experience. Brittany began her freshman year at Millsaps College in the Fall of 2020, and Creative Writing became one of her majors as a result of her time in McMullan Writers Workshops.

Today, Brittany works as a Museum Educator at the Two Mississippi Museums under the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, where she designs and leads educational and interactive experiences and programs for visitors, connecting the community of Mississippi with the state’s rich history. Nearly seven years later, Brittany still lives in the influence of McMullan Writers Workshops, guided by the path it helped set her on.
