We are honored to highlight Charlotte Seals, an inspiring alumna of Millsaps College, who graduated in 1988 with a major in biology and education and a minor in classical studies. Initially drawn to Millsaps by its strong academic foundation, Charlotte found her calling in education—a field where she continues to lead with passion and purpose.
During her time at Millsaps, Charlotte was an engaged member of the Black Student Organization and contributed to residential life on campus. These experiences helped her broaden her social circle and strengthen her sense of community—lessons that would later shape her inclusive approach as an educator and leader.
A pivotal moment in Charlotte’s academic journey came through the Heritage Program, which she describes as “opening her eyes to the world.” It was during a class with Professor Jaime Miltman that her perspective on education and society deepened, sparking a lifelong commitment to understanding culture within context.
After graduation, Charlotte began her career in teaching, a path influenced not only by her academic background but also by the rich interpersonal connections she built during college, including meeting her husband at Millsaps. Her early teaching experience exposed her to the realities of socio-economic and racial divides in education, which only fueled her resolve to make a difference.
Charlotte’s career has flourished over the past 35 years. From serving as a biology and chemistry teacher in Madison County to taking on leadership roles as Assistant Principal, Principal, and Assistant Superintendent, she has consistently championed student success and systemic growth. Today, she also serves as President of the Junior League of Jackson, continuing her dedication to community upliftment.
Reflecting on the impact of her Millsaps education, Charlotte credits the development of critical thinking, respect for diverse viewpoints and strong communication skills—particularly the ability to listen and collaborate—as the foundation of her career success. She emphasizes the importance of lifelong learning and encourages current students to work hard, be empathetic and surround themselves with people who inspire growth.
Literature has also played a key role in her leadership philosophy. The book “Philosophy Serving Leadership” helped guide her approach to reflective and service-oriented leadership, a hallmark of her career.
Charlotte remains closely connected to Millsaps, staying in touch with her college friends and contributing actively to the alumni network along with her husband. Their shared Millsaps experience continues to serve as a cornerstone of their life together.
Of all her achievements, Charlotte is most proud of the impact she’s had on young people from diverse backgrounds, helping them graduate, grow and thrive. Her commitment to cultural excellence and equitable education is a testament to her legacy as both a leader and a mentor.
When asked why she continues to give back to Millsaps, Charlotte speaks from the heart: “Millsaps poured so much into me. It’s only right that I give back—to ensure future generations have the same opportunity to learn, grow and lead. It’s a blessing to serve the place where my journey began.”
We are proud to celebrate Charlotte Seals as a remarkable Millsaps alumna who exemplifies servant leadership, educational equity, and lifelong learning.
