The Associated Colleges of the South (ACS) has announced the selection of Dr. Judith Caballero, associate professor of Spanish at Millsaps College, as one of 10 ACS Mellon Academic Leadership Fellows. Caballero was chosen following a competitive process among ACS member institutions for the fellowship, which will provide leadership experiences to humanities faculty members with the goal of expanding the demographics of academic administrators at ACS colleges. The fellowship program is supported by a $1.5 million grant from the Mellon Foundation.
“This is an exciting opportunity to bring new and fresh perspectives into the academic leadership arena, and I am grateful for the chance to be part of this cohort of faculty members who will help shape higher education in the years to come,” said Caballero. “I look forward to learning through this program and applying that knowledge to programs here at Millsaps College.”
Caballero teaches in the Modern Languages department at Millsaps. Her research focuses on cognitive literary studies, sartorial relevance and marginalized voices in early modern peninsular literature.
The ACS Mellon Academic Leadership fellowship will provide leadership training, mentoring and hands-on leadership experience. Each fellow will accept a two-year role at their institution, focusing on an assortment of responsibilities or a specific institutional project.
Dr. Keith Dunn, provost and dean of Millsaps College, applauded Caballero’s selection.
“The ACS has made a great choice with Judith Caballero,” Dunn said. “She brings clarity, organization and professionalism to everything she does, and her lived experience brings a valuable perspective that is too-often missing in higher-education administrators. She is an incredible asset to Millsaps College and her development as an administrative leader will serve the larger education community well for years to come.”
