I am a native of Jackson, Mississippi, and I graduated from Millsaps College in 1999. I completed my Ph.D. in history at Mississippi State in 2009, and joined the Millsaps faculty in 2010. My book “Resisting Equality: The Citizens’ Council, 1954-1989” was named the best book on Mississippi History in 2019. My other work has appeared in the Journal of Women’s History and the Journal of Southern History. I wrote the foreword for “The South Strikes Back,” a re-release of Hodding Carter III’s 1959 profile of the Citizens’ Council, a Mississippi-based organization that worked for over three decades to resist civil rights advances. In 2023, I was appointed interim provost and dean of the college, and I am currently serving as book review editor for the Journal of Mississippi History.
