The classroom is often the place where a student’s knowledge and mastery of material is tested and challenged.
Recently, a group of Millsaps College students had the opportunity to showcase their research and skills outside the classroom.
The annual meeting of the Mississippi Academy of Sciences was held in Biloxi, Mississippi where these students presented their research to a broad audience of professors and scientists from across the state. Their research covered a wide range of research, including synthesis of anti-cancer drugs, the chemistry of lakes, and residue analysis from ancient Maya pottery.
“These students spent many hours conducting research in the labs and preparing their findings for presentation to the finest scientific minds in the state,” said Dr. Tim Ward, professor of chemistry and Berry Endowed Chair in Science at Millsaps. “They work hard in their respective research labs to have the opportunity to present their findings outside the normal classroom, which strengthens their professional development and helps inform their professional careers.”
Students presenting and attending the meeting were Miriam Bhatti, Caroline McKinney, Ellie Pfaff, Hannah Henderson, Mary Tebbe, Thien Pham, Brittany Wilson, Rose Ward and Powers Lamb. Lamb was recognized for the best undergraduate presentation in the division of chemistry and chemical engineering.
Professor Ward was recognized at the meeting for his Outstanding Contributions to Science for his research accomplishments and his support for the Mississippi Academy of Sciences. His efforts were also recognized by his induction as a lifetime Fellow into the Mississippi Academy of Sciences.
