“It felt like home from the second I stepped on campus.”

When Fletcher Freeman toured Millsaps as a prospective student, he encountered professors, coaches, and students who asked him about his plans for the future. Those personal interactions were part of what attracted him to enroll at Millsaps, and now he initiates similar interactions as a Presidential Ambassador in the admissions office as part of his work to recruit new students to campus.

Originally from Fairhope, Alabama, Freeman is a sophomore political science major. In addition to his work as a Presidential Ambassador, he is also a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and College Republicans, and is also involved in student government.

“Some of my favorite classes have been Corruption in Politics and International Relations with Dr. (Nathan) Shrader and Dr. (Iren) Omo-Bare,” Freeman said. “They really love to teach the coursework because they have a passion for government and politics just as much as the students do.”

Away from campus, Freeman stays busy as an intern in the downtown Jackson office of the Mississippi Republican Party. His schedule has just become much busier with his historic election as chairman of the Mississippi Federation of College Republicans – the first Millsaps student to hold this statewide elected office.

“2019 is a big election year for Mississippi, and as the new chairman of College Republicans, I will work with students from across the state to show our support of Republican candidates and elected officials,” said Freeman. “I am excited to be a voice for Republican college students across this great state. As President Reagan once said, ‘College Republicans have helped change the course of history and have changed it for the better.’”

Shrader, chair of the department of political science at Millsaps, said Freeman’s efforts are helping to bring about change on campus and beyond.

“I am very proud of Fletcher and the Millsaps College Republicans for their historic achievement in electing the first chair of the state organization from Millsaps,” he said. “Millsaps College prides itself on being a place where students can embrace their diversity of interests in politics, no matter their partisan affiliation or ideological alignment. We look forward to continuing to play a role in Mississippi’s political scene with students who want to learn by doing on the front lines of politics!”

Freeman’s work in the classroom, in the admissions office, and in statewide politics is helping him build a strong base for whatever comes next.

“In the future, I plan to attend law school and work on national campaigns, and possibly run for public office,” he said.
