Maintenance Technician – Carpenter

Job Summary

The Maintenance Technician reports to the Deputy Director of Facilities Management and is responsible for performing routine building maintenance tasks in the following areas; carpentry, painting, keying and lock maintenance.

This position works on-site in Jackson, MS. Regular work hours are from 7:30 am – 4:00 pm with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break.

Job Duties

  • Perform carpentry work as required to repair windows, doors, hardware, screens, and furniture. Carpentry work may include building outdoor decks or other structures.
  • Hang items such as white boards, chalk boards, pictures, plaques, etc.
  • Build walls with metal or wood studs and hang sheetrock on those walls
  • Operate and maintain the campus keying system (BEST) which includes cutting keys and changing cylinders/cores.
  • Observe and report, through the work order system, any and all defects, deterioration, and wear and tear on the facilities
  • Assist other shop employees in the performance of day to day duties and responsibilities
  • Assist in setting up for campus events
  • Be available for on-call duty
  • Other duties as assigned by the Facilities Management supervisors

Qualifications 

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Some college or technical school or degree desired
  • Three years’ experience in the care and maintenance of similar facilities; or any combination of education, training, or experience
  • Ability to work within the overall organization of Facilities Management and work with skilled and unskilled personnel and administrators
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and be able to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to express ideas effectively and concisely
  • Must be willing to seek training to enhance or learn new skills
  • Must be accessible and available in the event of emergencies or when needed to meet the ongoing missions of the College
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Mississippi Driver’s License

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift, push, and/or pull minimum 50 lbs
  • Ability to climb ladder and step ladder
  • Must be able to bend at waist, sit, kneel, lie horizontally, climb, walk, and reach as job may require
