The Centers for Writing & Academic Excellence
The Millsaps Centers are committed to fostering inclusive, welcoming and supportive learning environments that engage students in all stages of the learning process, promoting personal growth and academic success. Our purpose is to provide individualized, peer-based support to equip students with tools and strategies to excel in the classroom and beyond.
The Centers are two academic centers in one
The Writing Center
Writing consultants are trained through the Writing Center to provide peer-to-peer feedback with all writers at all stages in the writing process for all genres of writing (humanities, sciences, business, professional and personal).
Center for Academic Success
and Excellence (CASE)
Academic consultants are trained through CASE to provide subject-specific academic support to peers in one-on-one or small group settings.
History of the Millsaps Centers
The Millsaps College Writing Center was founded in 1987 after an extensive effort by the college to place writing at the center of its academic agenda. Our primary location is named after John Stone, a Millsaps alum who pursued a Chemistry major in his undergraduate years before attending medical school.
Along with practicing cardiology and serving on the faculty of Emory Medical School, Stone published books of poetry, a collection of essays and “On Doctoring,” an anthology of literature and medicine that was presented for many years to each first-year medical student in the country as recommended reading. The Millsaps College Writing Center aims to continue the story and practice of Stone’s legacy by sharing the importance of writing in all that you may do.
The Center for Academic Success and Excellence opened in fall of 2019, with the goal of expanding peer-based academic support by providing subject-specific consultations. Together, the Writing Center and CASE make up the Millsaps Centers.
