Chair, Modern Languages
Associate Professor of Spanish

I joined the Millsaps Faculty in 2014 as chair of Modern Languages and associate professor of Spanish. I teach a broad range of elementary, intermediate, and advanced language and literature courses. I also teach courses on Hispanic film. My favorite course covers the representation of the Spanish Civil War in the novel and film. I earned a B.A. in history from Brigham University, an M.A. in Spanish from Louisiana State University and a Ph.D. in Hispanic languages and literature from UCLA in 2005. I credit my passion for Spanish to studying in Spain as an undergraduate. As a teacher, I attempt to illustrate the joys and challenges of learning a different language other than my own. I have published a number of scholarly articles on Spanish literature and film. My most recent publication compares the artistic endeavors of Greta Garbo, Maruja Mallo, and Concha MĂ©ndez at the onset of female celebrity and early feminism in Spain of the 1920s. I am currently revising a book draft entitled “Literature and Social Reform in Stories and Essays” by JosĂ© MartĂnez Ruiz (AzorĂn), 1894-1904.
