Chair, Modern Languages
Associate Professor of Spanish

I joined the Millsaps Faculty in 2014 as chair of Modern Languages and associate professor of Spanish. I teach a broad range of elementary, intermediate, and advanced language and literature courses. I also teach courses on Hispanic film. My favorite course covers the representation of the Spanish Civil War in the novel and film. I earned a B.A. in history from Brigham University, an M.A. in Spanish from Louisiana State University and a Ph.D. in Hispanic languages and literature from UCLA in 2005. I credit my passion for Spanish to studying in Spain as an undergraduate. As a teacher, I attempt to illustrate the joys and challenges of learning a different language other than my own. I have published a number of scholarly articles on Spanish literature and film. My most recent publication compares the artistic endeavors of Greta Garbo, Maruja Mallo, and Concha Méndez at the onset of female celebrity and early feminism in Spain of the 1920s. I am currently revising a book draft entitled “Literature and Social Reform in Stories and Essays” by José Martínez Ruiz (Azorín), 1894-1904.
