Assistant Track, Field & Cross-Country Coach

Job Summary

The Assistant Track, Field & Cross-Country Coach supports all aspects of the NCAA Division III men’s and women’s track and field and cross-country program at Millsaps College. The major areas of responsibility include coaching and development of student athletes, recruitment of student athletes and supporting the head coach in planning and executing practice, game and travel plans. This position reports directly to the Head Coach for Men’s & Women’s Track, Field and Cross-Country.

This position works on-site in Jackson, MS and requires regular evening and weekend work and travel.

Job Duties

  • Recruit and evaluate high school and college student athletes in accordance with college admission and NCAA Division III guidelines
  • Comprehend and practice the NCAA Division III philosophy emphasizing quality educational experience and academic success
  • Assist in the planning of and preparation for team practice sessions
  • Assist with scouting opponents and the videotape/information exchanges with conference & non-conference opponents
  • Assist with the coordination of team travel and logistics, including vehicles, lodging, and meals
  • Plan visit days for prospective students
  • Monitor student athlete academic progress by student athletes involving grade reports, study skill development, and counseling
  • Assist with team fundraising programs to augment operations budget
  • Manage team social media account in conjunction with the Sports Information team
  • Comply with all NCAA Division III, Southern Athletics Association (SAA), and Millsaps College guidelines
  • Organize community service activities for team members and coaches
  • Participate in various other areas of interest for the College, Student Life, and Athletics
  • Other duties as assigned by the Men’s & Women’s Track and Field and Cross-Country or the Director of Athletics

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in physical education, kinesiology or a related field
  • Certification in first aid, CPR and AED must be current at all times
  • 1-2 years’ experience coaching track and field or cross country, or playing at the collegiate level
  • Knowledgeable with sprints, hurdles, jumps or throws
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to read and interpret documents. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Computer Skills: Frontrush, Microsoft Office Suite, Internet, Google Apps…
  • Able to work in team environments and individually
  • Must possess a valid US driver’s license

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to work nights, weekends and travel overnight.
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Execution of skills to help in practice.
  • Frequent standing, walking and bending as well as reaching with arms or hands.
