Job Summary
Campus Safety Officers are charged with the responsibility of protect college personnel, students, and property, providing a safe and secure campus environment and preserving the peace.
The Campus Safety Officer position works on-site in Jackson, MS. The regular work week for a part-time officer is two 8-hour shifts per week. This part-time position is expected to work Saturday and Sunday.
Job Duties
The Campus Safety Officer may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential duties:
- Act as first responder to all campus emergencies, medical and criminal, that could potentially be hazardous and/or life threatening.
- Enforce campus policies, regulations and procedures.
- Assist Residence and Student Life with enforcement of regulations and Code of Conduct violations.
- Make regular inspections of the campus facilities during shift, noting unusual occurrences.
- Observe and report trespassers, fire, water leaks, or other hazardous conditions to supervisors/command staff/management which could lead to loss or damage to property and equipment.
- Unlock buildings as scheduled for events and ensure all windows and doors are locked as scheduled.
- Patrol assigned area.
- Handle all dispatch duties, including radio communications and monitoring traffic entering/exiting campus, emergency phone lines and surveillance cameras.
- Ensure only authorized persons are admitted to the campus while on duty.
- Enforce campus traffic regulations including parking and speeding.
- Direct and control traffic and provide crowd control and security during special events and as required.
- Observe weather conditions on campus and report dangerous or unusual weather-related activity to supervisors/command staff/management.
- Complete investigations of College violations, including viewing camera footage, talking with witnesses, and writing incident/accident reports.
- Act as a liaison for the College with local law enforcement.
- Provide awareness education/information on an informal basis to students and employees during other duties.
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required
- Must have a valid state driver’s license
- Experience with computers, including Microsoft Office or similar programs, and the ability to learn new technologies quickly to perform essential job functions
- Strong sense of customer service and demonstrated ability to be proactive in helping others.
- Strong written and oral communications and relational skills including the ability to communicate information, both verbal and written, in a clear and concise manner and to compose written reports, forms, and memos.
- Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and members of the public.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to work 8-hour shifts including weekends, and holidays. May work evenings or overnight, depending on assigned shift.
- Significant climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting.
- Must be able to lift, push, or pull up to 35 lbs on a regular basis and up to 175 pounds or more in an emergency situation.
- Must regularly stand or walk for extended periods of time, climb stairs, or sit for extended periods as needed.
- Mentally analyze a situation, solve problems, and make decisions under pressure.
- Must be able to read and understand written instruction.
- This position is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions and must be able to work in all types of weather.
- Must possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license.
