As a Multimedia Journalist, you will play a key role in telling the Millsaps College story through written articles, blogs, social posts, photos, short-form videos and many other media. You will develop relationships with faculty, staff, students and other key stakeholders to uncover these stories.

The ideal candidate will be a dynamic, self-starter with a knack for storytelling and mad skills in crafting compelling content! This role requires creativity, excellent communication skills and the ability to take on projects from inception to completion.

This position reports directly to the empowering and innovative Director of Communications and Community Engagement. This is a full-time, exempt position. Depending on activities and special events, evening and weekend hours will be required at times; otherwise, the normal work schedule is 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Hours of work performance are approximately 40 hours per week.

Job Duties

Things you’ll get to do include:

  • Amplify our voice: Bring your unique style to our storytelling efforts, making a memorable impact on our community.
  • Create diverse content: Dive into writing news stories, press releases, website content, social media posts and more, showcasing your versatility and creativity and having the opportunity to publish your content in various formats across multiple platforms.
  • Supervise: Assist in the management of a stable of student social media content producers.
  • Manage: Develop quarterly content calendars in collaboration with the director of communications and VP of marketing and communications and manage the scheduling and execution of materials to ensure timely and relevant messaging is delivered to appropriate audiences.
  • Craft newsletters: Create engaging and informative newsletters that keep our community connected and informed.
  • Enhance & Improve: Edit and proofread content from others to make sure it’s in top form and ready for any appropriate platform or medium.
  • Shoot and produce: Support our storytelling efforts by taking and editing compelling photos and videos that enhance our narrative.
  • Play reporter: Interview subjects and develop compelling stories that bring our messages to life.
  • Build a network: Connect with key stakeholders, influencers, and story sources to uncover,  develop and share compelling stories.
  • Collaborate with the team: Work closely with the rest of the team to develop and manage our editorial calendar, serve on committees and handle other tasks as assigned.
  • Create and publish: Use software for desktop publishing and multimedia creation
  • Stay abreast of current developments and trends for continued professional development.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree or certification in a related field (public relations, mass communications, journalism) or equivalent.
  • Minimum three years of professional experience.
  • Firm knowledge and understanding of AP Style and proofreading with excellent copywriting skills and proficiency in all Microsoft Office software
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with diverse populations and individuals at all levels of the organization.
  • Website editing and Divi-Builder knowledge a plus.
  • Adobe Creative Suite knowledge a plus.
  • Ability to learn quickly and adapt while adhering to deadlines and driving results in a sometimes high-pressure environment.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Manual dexterity is needed for keyboarding and other repetitive tasks.
  • Must be available to assist with activities and special events as needed in the evenings and on weekends
  • Must be able to lift and move up to 15 pounds without assistance.
